Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
